# Polar vs Stripe (2026): Merchant of Record vs You Are the Merchant

> Polar vs Stripe in 2026: merchant of record vs you-are-the-merchant. Fees, tax, recovery tools, and when Polar is the better default.

“Polar vs Stripe” is the People-also-ask on almost every Polar SERP, and it is the wrong frame if you treat them as two checkout buttons. Stripe is a payments processor: _you_ are the merchant. Polar is a merchant of record: _Polar_ is the merchant, and you are the supplier. That single legal difference drives the fee gap, the tax work, and which recovery tools you can buy.

| | Polar.sh | Stripe |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who is the merchant | Polar (MoR) | You |
| Headline card fee | Starter 5% + 50¢ · Pro 3.8% + 40¢ ($20/mo) | 2.9% + 30¢ domestic US |
| International cards | +1.5% | +1.5% (+1% if FX) |
| Sales tax / VAT | Included — Polar files | You file, or Stripe Tax (0.5% or $0.50/txn) plus registrations |
| Failed-payment recovery | Retries + portal notice | Retries; huge third-party market (Churnkey et al.) |
| Abandoned checkout | Webhook only | You build it, or buy a Stripe app |
| Best for | Indies who refuse to be a tax department | Teams that want control and will own compliance |

## Fees: Stripe wins the card, Polar wins the total if you hate tax

Stripe’s public US online rate is **2.9% + 30¢** for domestic cards, +1.5% international, +1% if currency conversion is required, $15 per dispute received and another $15 if you counter it.[1]

Polar Starter is 5% + 50¢, Pro is 3.8% + 40¢ at $20/month, plus the same +1.5% international add-on. That is a real premium. You pay it so Polar is the legal seller — refunds, chargebacks, and tax filings sit on Polar’s accounts, not yours.[2]

The honest apples-to-apples is Stripe + tax, not Stripe alone. Stripe Tax starts at a $90/month plan in limited regions, or **0.5% per transaction** on Checkout/Billing (no-code) /**$0.50 per transaction** on the API, and you are still the registrant in the jurisdictions where you have nexus.[1] An accountant on top of that is how Paddle’s marketing lands at “~7% all-in vs Stripe.” Polar’s 5% + 50¢ is the all-in number for a developer who does not want that stack.

Full Polar plan math — Starter through Scale, Early Member, the $30 Sweden example — is in [Polar.sh fees explained](/blog/polar-fees-explained).

## Tax and liability

On Stripe you invoice the customer. If you blow a VAT threshold or skip a US state registration, that is your letter from the tax authority. On Polar you invoice Polar; Polar invoices the customer. That is the product. It is also why Polar (and [Paddle](/blog/polar-vs-paddle), and [Lemon Squeezy](/blog/polar-vs-lemon-squeezy-vs-gumroad)) cost more than raw Stripe.

Pick Stripe if you already have nexus handled, you want custom payment flows, or you need the rest of the Stripe surface (Connect, Treasury, Issuing). Pick Polar if the job is “sell this SaaS globally without incorporating a tax practice.”

This is not a Polar alternatives page

People leaving Polar for Stripe cannot use a Polar-native recovery tool. This page is for the decision _before_ you pick a merchant. If you already sell on Polar, stay; the recovery gap is cheaper to close than a processor migration.

## Recovery: Stripe has a market, Polar has webhooks

Failed payments are 20–40% of subscription churn. On Stripe you can buy Churnkey, Churn Buster, Stunning, or roll your own Billing retries. Those products do not speak Polar.

Polar retries the charge and can mail one customer-portal notice. It does not run a merchant-branded dunning sequence, and it does not email abandoned checkouts. The events exist (`checkout.expired`, past-due, cancellation). The inbox work does not.

## Who should pick which

- **Pick Polar** if you are an indie or small SaaS, you want MoR, and you will live in Polar’s API / adapters (Next.js, Better Auth, Laravel).
- **Pick Stripe** if you want the lowest processing rate, you will own tax, and you want the Stripe app ecosystem — including serious dunning software.
- **Pick Paddle instead of either** if you want MoR _and_ built-in Retain. That comparison is [Polar vs Paddle](/blog/polar-vs-paddle).

## If you pick Polar: close the recovery gap

Polar will not grow a Churnkey-shaped marketplace. [Snagr](/) is the Polar-native version of that job: OAuth into the org, email abandoned checkouts, failed renewals, and cancellations. Free until it recovers your first payment, then $19/month flat — not a cut of recovered revenue — with a 5% holdback so the number in the dashboard is incremental. Walk through the webhook loop in [how to recover abandoned Polar checkouts](/blog/recover-abandoned-checkouts-polar).

## FAQ

### Is Polar cheaper than Stripe?

No, not on the card. Stripe’s US online rate is 2.9% + 30¢ (+1.5% international). Polar Starter is 5% + 50¢ (+1.5% international). You pay Polar the extra because Polar is the merchant of record and files the tax. Add Stripe Tax (0.5% no-code or $0.50/API transaction) plus registrations and the gap narrows.

### Do I need Stripe Tax if I use Polar?

No. Polar is the seller of record. Polar collects and remits VAT, GST, and sales tax. You do not register in each state or country for those Polar sales.

### Can I use Churnkey or other Stripe dunning tools on Polar?

Not natively. Churnkey and most dunning products plug into Stripe, Paddle, Chargebee, or Braintree. Polar retries charges and emits webhooks; merchant-branded recovery email is a separate tool.
